Communication has been a constantly evolving phenomenon in the past few decades. With the development of cell phones, text messaging, online chat, and video calling, the way people get in touch with each other and pass along information is always different. Millennials have been the real catalyst for this change, as they have grown up alongside such revolutionary technology. The more the millennial generation has trickled into the business world, the further business communication has been altered by their presence. Unfortunately, some companies are very resistant to such change. However, it is in the best interests of all employers to adapt their communication to be most effective for the largest generation in the United States.
Millennials enter a new work environment with the expectation that all things, such as communication, will be done as efficiently as possible. They, more than any other generation, have experience with the latest communication technology, and are therefore used to being able to get in touch with people right away. Efficiency is always desirable, but new communication technology can be expensive. Understandably, business executives need to be able to justify the expense over other needs in the company. As it turns out, up-to-date communication technology motivates millennial employees to work harder.
A recent survey by Microsoft found that almost 100% of millennials polled reported that using current communication technology was one of the most important things about a business. Outdated communication methods affect their ability to be productive, and therefore makes employee retainment less likely. In fact, millennial employees are less likely to stay working for a company with any technology that experiences consistent delays. As they are used to being able to find information at the click of a button, millennials do not have the patience to get slowed down by old technology.
This information is important for every employer to consider when thinking about changing communications technology. However, it is also necessary to keep in mind that you do not have to switch all employees over to one communication method at once. Preferences regarding specific types of communication technology vary on a vast scale, and forcing all employees to use only one communication platform will not be beneficial to your company either. I would recommend assembling a variety of communication options, training all employees on the most appropriate situations in which to use certain types of communication, and letting your workforce choose what works best for them.
Instead of buying into millennial stereotypes, scorning them for being too ‘demanding’ or ‘lazy,’ understand that these employees are striving for efficiency. They want to be able to do their jobs in as efficient a manner as possible, and communication is the first step.
